Entertainment for Adults

During the Ottoman period, the adults used to organize archery contests, wrestling matches, go hunting, play chess, backgammon, chequers etc. for having fun.

In the last century of the Ottoman Empire places of music and entertainment were opened in Istanbul, which reflected the multi-cultural nature of the city. In those days, public storytellers and shadow puppetry were also among the forms of entertainment for adults.

During the Republican era, there appeared artistic shows such as movies, plays, opera, ballet, and concerts, as well as casinos, restaurants, bars, cafes, pubs, and large-scale organisations and festivals.
