Public Places

Public space is a concept used to signal the common activity area where opinions, discourses and actions were produced and developed to determine and realize the common favors of the society. Any place other than some private places as houses like squares, parks and cafes where people come together and meet are known as public spaces.

At the final periods of the Ottoman Empire, people used to meet in lands to make picnic, in Haydarpaşa land or Cirpici land. There used to be many gardens and parks in all around Istanbul, although they were not as big as those lands. Those lands, gardens have disappeared under the adverse impact of urbanization. However, squares which are mostly remembered during times of elections have started to become important recently.
Shopping places were small stores in districts alongside with the Grand Bazaar and the Egyptian Bazaar. Now our modern public places are multi-floored and multi-purpose.
