Places of Worship

Praying houses of the members of various religions in Istanbul are mosques, churches, synagogues. It is possible to see two or even three types of such places in places where Muslim and non-Muslim people live together.

There are high number of churches and synagogues especially in Beyoğlu, since non-Muslim people used to live there frequently. Within the walls nowadays called the “historical peninsula,” Muslim population is intense and mosques are prevailing under the impact of the palace. At least a praying house is present in each district.
Many religious place members reduced in number and many places were closed or many churches were transformed into mosques with the non-Muslim migration following the foundation of th Republic.
