The City and the Sea

Istanbul is a city completely surrounded by the sea at three sides. With the help of the Golden Horn, it includes more than one peninsula. There used to be sea baths in the first years of the Republic in a city that much involved with the sea. People used to swim in the sea in those baths with doctor prescription. Since the sea is clean including many beaches, it was possible to swim there. However, with the advance of industrialization, at first the Golden Horn had become a dead sea then fishes scarced in number in Marmara sea. The islands used to be the countryside of Istanbul and they still have the same quality.

The transportation of Istanbul flows from one side to another. The indispensable part of the transportation mostly realized through highways and bridges is on sea. Sea buses and boats connect the Bosphorus on Marmara and even Istanbul to other cities.
