Schools and Education

When they became 7 years old, the children started going to school. In the 1950s, the number of girls attending the high schools was still low. In addition to co-ed schools, there were also separate high schools for boys and girls. Minorities like Greeks and Armenians had their own schools, which were off limits for Muslims. However, the minorities could attend Muslim schools.

Graduating from the high school, one could attend the university after taking an entrance exam. But in those days almost each and every university and faculty had its own exam. During the Second World War, the Jewish scholars who escaped from Germany made Istanbul University famous across the world.
